-------------------
FREEING MORE MEMORY
-------------------
If the installation program has told you don't have enough free memory to
run CHOMPER, try the following suggestions.
1. From the DOS prompt, type "MEM" and press Enter.
2. You'll see a lot of information about your computer's memory. Look
at the number following the words "largest executable program size".
This is how much free conventional memory your computer has available.
If this number is less than 573,440 your computer does not have enough
free conventional memory for CHOMPER to run properly.
Tips on freeing more memory:
1. Make sure you are not running any type of menu program such as
"DOSSHELL". To make sure that you are not, type "exit" at the DOS
prompt, this will return you to the menu program if you are currently
using one. Exit the menu program completely and type "mem" again to
see if there is enough free conventional memory.
2. If you have DOS 6.0 or higher you can free more conventional memory
by running memmaker. To run memmaker type "memmaker" from the DOS
prompt and follow the instructions given. For more information on
how to use memmaker, consult your DOS 6.X manual.
3. If the above suggestions do not fix the problem and you have DOS 6.0
or higher, then you can do the following.
A. Reboot your computer.
B. Wait for the message "starting MS-DOS..." to come up. As soon
as you see this message, press the [F5] key on your keyboard.
This will cause DOS to bypass all of your TSRs, memory
managers and other programs that normally occupy conventional
memory.
C. Now change to the CHOMPER directory and type "CHOMPER".
4. If you have a version of DOS below 6.0, then you need to create a
"boot disk", to allow you to boot your computer without loading any
unwanted TSRs or other programs that might use conventional memory.
A. Put a blank disk in your A: drive and type the following.
FORMAT A: /S
(NOTE: Don't do this from your B: drive, because you may not be
able to boot from your B: drive.)
B. After the disk has been formatted, reboot your computer with the
disk in the A: drive. From now on, whenever you want to run
CHOMPER, reboot your computer with the boot disk in the A:
drive.
